Kelly Clarkson Calls Out Scooter Braun for Taking Offense to Taylor Swift’s Album Re-Recording Idea

Kelly Clarkson believes Scooter Braun ‘took offense’ to her suggestion that Taylor Swift re-record her albums after Braun purchased her masters

Kelly Clarkson is opening up about a 2019 tweet she sent, suggesting Taylor Swift re-record her old albums, revealing she thinks that may have offended Scooter Braun.

Back in June 2019, Swift’s former record label Big Machine Records was purchased by Braun, making him the owner of her master recordings.

She had been trying to buy back her masters before the sale, but the label’s founder Scott Borchetta refused, before selling the company to Braun.

Just a few weeks later, Clarkson sent a tweet, suggesting that Swift – who just announced the 2024 Australian leg of her Eras tour – simply re-record any albums she didn’t own the masters for, which Swift ultimately ended up doing.

During a new interview on Andy Cohen’s Sirius XM radio program, Clarkson revealed she ran into Braun shortly thereafter, and believed he ‘took offense’ to her tweet.

Thought: Just a few weeks later, Clarkson sent a tweet, suggesting that Swift – who just announced the 2024 Australian leg of her Eras tour – simply re-record any albums she didn’t own the masters for, which Swift ultimately ended up doing

The July 2019 tweet read, ‘@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions. I’d buy all of the new versions just to prove a point.’

When Cohen asked about the tweet, Clarkson revealed, ‘I think Scooter took offense to it because we ran into each other, and I think he reached out at the time to my manager’ she said in the interview clip, which airs in full on Friday.

‘I was like, “It wasn’t anything against him.” I just, when she came out and said that [about her albums] and I heard about it, I was like, “Whatever. Like, rerecord them. Your fans will support you.” They did,’ Clarkson added.

When asked what Braun said to her, she clarified that he, ‘didn’t say anything to me,’ adding, ‘I think he called my manager at the time, I heard.

‘I don’t know what happened or what was said, but I think he thought I was attacking him. I honest to God didn’t even realize who had the rights,’ Clarkson admitted.

‘I didn’t even know all the information. All I heard was, “Man, I really want to own [my work],”‘ Clarkson added.

Clarkson continued that Swift, ‘writes everything’ and owning her own music is, ‘so important to her.’

‘She’s a businesswoman. It felt wrong that she didn’t have the opportunity. Right? That’s the thing,’ Clarkson added.

‘It’s like, if you have the opportunity and you choose to not pay that much money, that’s one thing, but to not have the opportunity to own something that is really important to you … I knew it was important to her,’ Clarkson said.

She also admitted that she’s not that type of artist who would want to own her masters, and that she’s, ‘not a businesswoman.’

‘I thought, “Why don’t you just rerecord them and your fans will support you,” and literally, she’s a genius,’ Clarkson added.

‘Not only did she rerecord it, she planned it, like, with this Eras Tour where she gets to [perform everything]. Like, this woman is brilliant,’ Clarkson contended.

When Cohen asked Clarkson if Swift ever thanked her for the suggestion, Clarkson said she didn’t.

‘No, she’s brilliant. She would’ve come up with that on her own, and she maybe already had before I even tweeted it,’ Clarkson admitted.
